Exam

  • The Maryland Home Improvement Contractor exam has 55 questions and a time limit of 150 minutes while the Home Improvement Subcontractor exam has 35 questions and a time limit of 90 minutes. 
  • The contractor exam requires a 71% to pass while the subcontractor exam requires a 72% to pass.  
  • Topics on both exams include home improvement law; door-to-door sales act; labor laws; safety regulations; payroll taxes; business and financial; estimating. 
  • The contractor exam will also include questions pertaining to the door-to-door sales act.
  • The fee for the exam is $54 and pre-approval is required.  To schedule your exams, contact PSI at 1-800-733-9267.

Services 

This license allows for alteration, remodeling, repair or replacement of a building or part of a building used as a residence. Home Improvement also includes work done on individual condominium units. It does not includes work done on apartment buildings that contain four or more single family units or work done on commonly owned areas of condominiums.  

Requirements

  • General liability insurance shall be required to be maintained in the amount of $50,000.
  • Applicants must show 2 years of trade experience.

The application/license fees are as follows:

  • $225 for each place of business of the contractor;
  • $125 for a subcontractor license;
  • $75 for a salesperson license.
  • There is also a $15 fee for processing the application.
  • Application processing time is usually 1 month. 

  

Reciprocity 

There are no reciprocal agreements for this license as of this time.

Continuing Education

As of this time, there is no continuing education for this license.
